Fri 4 – Sun 6th sept 2026  Romanskraal (near Albertinia) hack  Donovan Kotze  Grade 2M    kotzed@ukzn.ac.za   082 3022228 This weekend outing is an opportunity to “hand back” to Nature in the magnificent Langeberg Mountains north of Albertinia where we will be clearing invasive alien pine trees on Chris Davies’ beautiful mountain property.  Chris has done some sterling clearing work at Romanskraal with some help from GCBR, but needs all the help he can get, especially with the follow up clearing of young trees. Friday and Saturday night we will camp at Chris’ rustic campsite which has a toilet and braai place.  The farm road requires a vehicle with good clearance but 4 by 4 is not needed.  Turnoff to Bergfontein farm: 34.007820°S, 21.497881°E. Location of the Bergfontein campsite -33.989854°S, 21.478025°E. Programme: Friday 4 September, arrive by 17h00 to set up camp before it gets dark.  Saturday 5 September 08h00, we begin clearing hakea on the farm within 1 km of the campsite and progress into the adjacent mountains where plenty of widely-scattered young pine trees await us.  This will be followed by an early evening bring-and-braai. Sunday 6 September at 08h00, the option of more hacking or a scenic morning walk before heading home.   What to bring: Your own tents and camping and cooking equipment and food.  For the hack, be sure to bring gloves and wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, your lunch and large water bottles.  Bring a handsaw and loppers if you have - most of the trees are still saplings.  Extra handsaws are available for those who do not have a “weapon”.   Please RSVP before 25 August to Donovan Kotze kotzed@ukzn.ac.za or 082 3022228

We will climb this infrequently visited peak from the North. Apart from the ned and start points, the route will be determined on the day. Come prepared for an exploratory hike.

Leader: Philip Hills

We will climb from Mitchell's Pass. Total elevation for the day is likely to be around 1400m, so it will be a very long day, but we can expect to be rewarded with fantastic views of the Hex range. Hikers should be comfortable climbing off trail over a considerable distance.
